How does a septic system work?

Follow the flow from your home to the tank, the drain field and the soil.

Conventional septic system cutaway: wastewater travels from the home to a tank with floating scum, liquid and settled sludge, then through a distribution box into a drain field and the soil below.

  1. 1

    From your home

A main drain carries wastewater from household fixtures to the buried tank.

  2. 2

    Inside the tank

Solids settle as sludge; oils float as scum. The liquid between them moves toward the outlet.

  3. 3

    Into the drain field

Partially treated liquid is distributed through the field’s piping.

  4. 4

    Through the soil

Unsaturated soil receives and further treats the liquid as it moves downward.
